Quake II RTX was initially released in June 2019, reimagining the classic game’s graphics with amazing ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, NVIDIA wrote. The 22-year old id Software shooter Quake II has been given new life thanks to ray tracing technology. RTX graphics are made possible by the new Vulkan API for the games ray tracing capabilities which will require an NVIDIA Turing based graphics cards ( RTX series) in order to play with and use all of the new, included lighting and surface effects. A remastered version of Quake II is now available digitally for 10 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles. Playing Quake II RTX on the GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q, which is a 2 year old graphics card will likely deliver a struggling 31 FPS. According to one reviewer, GOG’s Quake II RTX release only includes the Windows build and doesn’t include Linux support.
